Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG1_1_KE indicates the person's province of residence within Kenya 1 year ago.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
- North and South Rift Valley provinces are identified separately in the 1979 and 1989 samples, but in all other years they are combined as the Rift Valley province.
Kenya passed a new constitution in 2010 which nullified all geography changes that occurred after 1992. As a result, the former Provinces were abolished, and the former second level administrative units, formerly Districts, were elevated to the new first level administrative units and renamed Counties. The 47 districts present in 1992, with the same boundaries present at that point, now represent the 47 counties that make up the first geographic level. Despite the former provinces now holding no administrative role, provinces are still used as the level of geography identified in MIG1_1_KE to preserve comparability between samples.
MIG1_1_KE is not available for the 1969 sample.
The universe in the 1989 census is persons age 1+ except travelers and those receiving the short questionnaire. In all other censuses, the universe is persons age 1+.
