Description

FORMTYPE indicates the type of questionnaire received by private households. It allows users identifying whether respondents answered questions from a short form, a long form, a standard (single) form, or whether the data are derived from administrative registers (i.e. no questionnaire was used).

Comparability — General

Samples were classified as using a standard (single) form if they applied a unique set of questions, disregarding if those were initially organized in separate questionnaires for dwellings, households, and persons.

The universe of FORMTYPE intentionally excludes group quarters, given that they often received a separate (distinct) questionnaire from the overall population. Group quarters can be identified with GQ or GQTYPE. For more information about specific questionnaire forms used for data collection, users can refer to the sample design page.

Comparability — Austria [top]

The 2011 sample did not have questionnaire forms; this census was register-based.

Comparability — Canada [top]

The 1852 sample is classified as a "single form," even though separate forms were applied to households in urban and rural areas, which had differences in the availability of specific questions.

The 1971 to 2001 samples are based on the census long form (2B). The 2011 sample corresponds to the National Household Survey questionnaire (that replaced the census long form), and it is classified as a "single form."

The 2007 sample includes a mixture of households that received the short and the long census forms. Many variables apply only to long-form respondents, as indicated in their universe statements. FORMTYPE allows users to identify the long-form households, which are roughly 20% of the sample population.

The 2008 census applied a questionnaire only to a sample of the population, where the remainder of the data corresponded to administrative registers. This questionnaire is classified as "single form".

Comparability — Kenya [top]

In 1989, 1999, 2009, and 2019, the longer questionnaire applied to private households is classified as "single form", given that the abbreviated forms were only used with special populations and group quarters.

Comparability — Mongolia [top]

The 2020 sample includes a mixture of households that received the short and the long census forms. Many variables apply only to long-form respondents, as indicated in their universe statements. FORMTYPE allows users to identify the long-form households, which are roughly 10% of the sample population.

Comparability — Netherlands [top]

The 2001 and 2011 samples were collected through virtual censuses; therefore, no physical forms were used either for 2001 or 2011.

Comparability — Spain [top]

The 2011 census is classified as "single form" since it used a single questionnaire that was applied to a sample of the population (the rest of the data from the census operation corresponds to administrative registers).
