Description
EDUCIR indicates the person's educational attainment in Iran in terms of the level of schooling completed.
Comparability — General
The changes in Iran's education system structure are reflected in the educational attainment variable from 2006 census:
[] After the 70's, the structure was 5-3-4, with 5 years in primary, 3 years in the guidance cycle, and 4 years in the secondary cycle. Technical, vocational, and academic branches were offered in the latter. The academic branch prepared students for higher education.
[] After the 90's, the structure was 5-3-3-1, due to the reduction of the secondary cycle to 3 years and the addition of a pre-university course of 1 year for students preparing for higher education.
The educational attainment variable includes categories that correspond to one specific education system but some others that represent more than one system. More detailed categories to identify persons in previously existing systems could be found in the unharmonized version of this variable.
The first 5 grades of elementary school represent persons studying in any of the three described systems, while an additional category identifies persons who obtained the elementary school diploma (6 years of study in the 6-3-3 system and 5 years of study in the more recent systems). Middle school distinguishes between persons in the 6-3-3 system, which are coded as grades 7 to 9, and persons in either of the two more recent systems, which are coded as grades 1 to 3. High school mixes persons in either system. The pre-university additional year corresponds only to the 5-3-3-1 system and is part of high school. The eight years of primary and lower secondary are considered basic education.
Secondary vocational education has different categories for each of the three systems: the 5-3-3-1 or "credited system", the 5-3-4 or "4-years system", and the 6-3-3 or "6-years system". It distinguishes whether the person attained only part of the respective level (no degree) or if the person completed the level (degree). Each category includes different fields of specialization. The difference between vocational and training and mastership in the credited system is regarding the skills that are acquired in each case, but both are forms of secondary vocational education.
Finally, persons with some form of post-secondary education (college, master's program, medicine, community college, or doctoral program) are classified according to whether they attained only part of the respective level (no degree) or if they completed the level (degree).
