Description

BPLCL indicates the province within Chile in which the person was born. The samples for 1982 to 2017 are coded into the modern geographic classification of provinces.

Comparability — General

BPLCL is fully comparable for 1982-2002, but users should be aware that BPLCL does not take into account changes in boundaries over time. The 2017 census identifies several new provinces created after 2002.

In 1974, the Chilean government decentralized the administrative regions of its country, and many province boundary and names were changed. It was not possible to recode the less-detailed pre-1970 system into the more-detailed modern system.
