Comparability — General
The variable is comparable across all samples, although there is variation in the specific information used to construct the underlying mother and father pointer variables.
The variable NCHILD counts the total number of own children linked to the person.
No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for the individual-level samples that do not contain entire households of persons.
If any of a person's own children have an AGE value of 999 ("Not reported/missing"), that person receives a value of 98 ("One or more children have unknown age") for NCHLT5.
Family interrelationship variables were constructed using different algorithms in historical samples than those used for modern samples. In pre-1950 samples, surnames are often available and help determine relationships. The historical samples also rely more on record order when there is uncertainty determining the relationship.

The comparability of this variable is affected by the information available on family relationships. NCHLT5 is based on the information contained in RELATE (Relationship to household head), MOMLOC, and POPLOC, for all years except 1850-1870. In these years, relationships to the household head are imputed and NCHLT5 is based on imputed family relationships. For more information, see the IPUMS-USA user guide. The 1880 and 1850 full-count datasets are top-coded at 9.
