Comparability — General

The samples differ in terms of whether the migrants were explicitly permanent and how recently they migrated.

The Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala 2002, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru samples explicitly count only permanent migrants. The other countries' documentation makes no such stipulation, but permanency may be implied given the time period specified below.

The samples differ in how recent the migration occurrences are counted as such: Saint Lucia and Jamaica (1 year); Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ecuador 2001, Mali, Peru 2017, and Senegal (5 years); Uruguay (6 years); Ecuador 2010 (9 years); Bolivia 2012, Guatemala 2002, Panama and Malawi (10 years); Kenya (14 years); Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala 1994, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Peru 2007 (no time limit).

For a similar variable, available for Mexico, that includes persons who may have left and returned over the past five years, see INTMIG2.
