Description
MIGCTRY1 indicates the country of residence 1 year ago for international migrants. Persons who did not live abroad 1 year prior are coded to the "non-migrant" category.

Comparability — General
This variable is comparable across samples, although the number of countries specified varies. The time frame is somewhat more than one year for Portugal.
The codes for MIGCTRY1 are patterned on those used for BPLCOUNTRY (country of birth).
For similar information for different time intervals since migration, see MIGCTRY5, MIGCTRY0, MIGCTRYC, and MIGCTRYP. A series of country-specific variables document intra-national migration over different time intervals.

The universe varies slightly across samples.
Comparability — Italy [top]
In the Italy labor force surveys, persons under 1 year old cannot be identified; therefore, they are included in the universe, probably with non-migrants. Thus, the universe for these samples is all persons.
Comparability — Malawi [top]
In most cases, Malawi assigned people living abroad one year ago to world regions rather than specific countries. The precise group of countries in a region may differ slightly from the IPUMSI classification.
In the 2018 sample, respondents who indicated their country of residence 1 year ago was "Asia and Oceania, country unspecified" were categorized as "other, unclassifiable or unspecified", for this variable.
Comparability — Mozambique [top]
In 2017, respondents were asked about their country of residence 1 year ago. The universe for this sample is persons age 1+. This is different from previous samples (1997 and 2007), where the universe is household residents age 1+.
Comparability — Papua New Guinea [top]
For 1990, Autonomous Region of Bougainville (North Solomons) was included within Papua New Guinea and not coded to Solomon Islands (#52040).
Comparability — Portugal [top]
The Portugal 1991 and 2001 censuses asked for residence on December 31 of 1989 and 1999, respectively. The two censuses were taken in April and March, so MIGCTRY1 actually records residence approximately 15 months ago.
Comparability — Puerto Rico [top]
For country of previous residence for the 1970, 1990 and 2000 samples, seeMIGCTRY5 (Country of residence 5 years ago).
The unharmonized source variables have detail on U.S. state of residence one year ago.
Comparability — Spain [top]
In the Spain labor force surveys, persons under 1 year old cannot be identified; therefore, they are included in the universe, probably with non-migrants. Thus, the universe for these samples is all persons. The unharmonized source variables differentiate between the original 15 EU countries and three categories for newer EU countries.
Comparability — Tanzania [top]
The 1988 Tanzania sample has data on country of residence 10 years ago in MIGCTRY0.
Comparability — Zambia [top]
In 1990 and 2000, the question was asked of all persons. In 2010, the question was asked of household members and visitors who were present at the time of enumeration.
