ENUMMO indicates the month in which the census or survey was collected.

Comparability — General

ENUMMO identifies the month of data collection for fieldwork that generally had a duration between 1 day to 2-4 weeks. There may be variations in the timing of data collection for urban versus rural areas, or for special populations. Users can refer to the sample design page for further details.

In many samples, the enumeration instructions dictated that all responses should reflect information as of the official census date, even if data collection took place across a period of weeks or months. Please refer to the sample design page and the enumeration materials for information on the census date and how it was used.

For samples where the fieldwork period spans more than one month, ENUMMO records the mid-point value for the month interval. The following samples were classified using this criterion and correspond to a mid-point month: Brazil 1960-2010, Canada 2011, Colombia 2005, Fiji 2014, France 2006-2011, Israel 1972-2008, Mauritius 1990-2011, Papua New Guinea 1980, Portugal 1981-2011, and Switzerland 1980-1990.

For samples where the fieldwork period was longer than 12 months, the data was excluded from ENUMMO. The following census samples were not considered based on this criterion: Egypt 1848-1868 and Togo 1960. The Nigeria 2010 sample included multiple interview visits and it is excluded from ENUMMO.

For quarterly surveys, the middle month of each quarter was considered as the month of the fieldwork period (e.g., Italy, Mexico, Philippines, and Spain), unless the data specifically identifies the month of data collection for each record individually. Thus, the month assigned for the first, second, third, and fourth quarters is February, May, August, and November, respectively.

Users should note that for most samples, ENUMMO is assigned one value across all households in the same sample. The only exception is the Uruguay 2006 household survey, in which ENUMMO varies by household.

The 1960-2010 census samples had a fieldwork period of 3 to 5 months, which is assigned to a mid-point.

In 1980 census data were collected between the official census date of September 1 and December 1980, and the sample was assigned a mid-point month of October. The 1980 census also included information on the month of the last live birth, and there are no births reported after August 1980, consistent with the official census date. Thus, users may want to use the official start census date rather than the value of ENUMMO depending on their analysis.

In 2011, enumeration took place between May and August, and a mid-point month of enumeration was recorded (June).

Comparability — Colombia [top]

In 2005, enumeration took place between May 2005 and February 2006, and a mid-point month of enumeration was recorded (September).

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

Fieldwork for the 1994 census started on October 10, 1994, for all regions except Afar and Somali; Afar was enumerated on July 22, 1996, and Somali was enumerated on September 11, 1997. Thus, October is recorded for ENUMMO.

In 2014, enumeration took place between March to December 2013, and a mid-point month of enumeration was recorded (July).

The 2006 and 2011 censuses changed their data collection methodology to a rolling census with fieldwork across multiple years taking place during January-February each year. That is, the data for the 2006 census were collected in January and February of each year 2004-2008, and for the 2011 census in January and February of each year 2009-2013.

In 1982, the exact date of the census is unknown, but the census form uses the month of August as reference for certain questions.

The 1972-2008 census samples had a fieldwork period of 2 to 3 months, which is assigned to a mid-point.

Comparability — Kenya [top]

For the 1989 sample, the value of ENUMMO is consistent with the official census date of October 25, but researchers analyzing fertility patterns should note that the data on month of last live birth appear to capture all births only through August 1989.

The 1990-2011 census samples had a fieldwork period of 3 months, which is assigned to a mid-point.

Comparability — Nicaragua [top]

For the 1995 sample, the value of ENUMMO is consistent with the official census date of June 25, but researchers analyzing fertility patterns should note that the data on month of last live birth appear to capture all births only through April 1995.

In 2005, ENUMMO is assigned to June, given that the census was conducted between May 28 and June 11 of 2005.

In 1980, the census questionnaire was applied between May and October of 1980 and the the value in ENUMMO is assigned to a mid-point (July).

The 1981-2011 census samples had a fieldwork period of 2-4 months, which is assigned to a mid-point.

The 1980 and 1990 samples had a fieldwork period of 2 months, where ENUMMO takes the value of the starting month.

In the 2006 sample, data were collected throughout the entire year, and the month of enumeration was recorded for each household; thus, ENUMMO takes different values for different households in this sample.
