Description
EDUCFJ indicates the person's educational attainment in Fiji in terms of the level of schooling and grade completed.
Comparability — General
Fiji has a 6-4-3 educational system, which consists of 6 years of primary education (Class 1 to 6), 4 years of junior secondary education (Form 1 to 4), and 3 years of secondary education (Form 5 to 7). Students can choose between Form 7 in a secondary school or doing a foundation level course at a university. Post-secondary education includes technical, teacher training, diplomas, certificates, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
The principal comparability issue concerns the different types of tertiary education. The 1976 sample identifies categories of post-secondary education according to specialties and institutions, which are grouped for EDUCFJ into technical, teacher training, or bachelor studies. The 1986 sample combines all persons with post-secondary education in a single category (tertiary). The 1996, 2007, and 2014 samples divide the tertiary education into four main categories: technical education, such as certificates and diplomas; bachelor degrees; and post-graduate degrees. Only the 1996 and 2007 samples identify the foundation level course or form 7.
In the 1976, 1986, 1996, and 2014 samples, persons currently in school stated the grade they are currently attending. For EDUCFJ one year of education is subtracted in the primary and secondary levels to indicate the grade completed. No deduction was implemented for tertiary because the samples do not report years within level. This likely overestimates completed education for persons currently attending tertiary.
The data for the 2007 sample are calculated from separate questions for persons currently attending and those who attended in the past. One year is subtracted for persons in school for which we have information on the grade/year within level. Persons currently in their first year of certificate, diploma, or bachelor degree are considered to have completed form 6. The post-graduate, masters, and doctorate categories include those currently attending and those who attended in the past.
The 2014 sample has less detail available for persons who attended school in the past, who only report whether their highest level completed was primary, secondary, or tertiary education. Information about certificates, diplomas, or bachelor degrees is provided only by those currently in school, while those who attended in the past only indicate whether they completed tertiary. Therefore, EDUCFJ underestimates the number of persons attaining specific tertiary qualifications, with respect to other Fiji samples, since many responses are grouped into the "tertiary, not specified" category. Similar comparability issues arise for persons who attained incomplete primary or secondary and are not currently in school.
A harmonized international classification of educational attainment is available in EDATTAIN, which imposes a number of compromises to regularize the data across countries. EDUCFJ retains the full detail on educational attainment for the Fiji samples.
