Description

GEO1_EG1848_1868 identifies the household's province within Egypt from 1848 to 1868. Provinces are the primary level of geography for Egypt.

The full set of geography variables for Egypt, both historical and contemporary, can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. Other geography variables from the historical samples of Egypt include, GEO2_EG1848_1868, GEO1_EG1848, and GEO1_EG1868.

Comparability — General

In the 1868 Egypt dataset, 13 out of 23 provinces are entirely missing. We cannot confirm whether the 1868 census was a nationwide census whose registers did not survive or rather a partial one that was not completed for some unknown reason.

The districts of Suez, Siwa, and the Middle regions are missing from the 1848 sample.
