The question asked for the number of hours the person usually worked per week in his or her principal occupation.

Comparability — Indonesia [top]

The samples reports actual hours worked during the past week. For the 1980-1995 samples, persons who had a job but were temporarily absent from their primary job the week preceding the census are coded as "0" hours worked. Such persons are not in the universe for 1976. The 1980-1995 samples also contain data on total hours worked, found in HRSWRK1.

The census instructions for 1976 state that housemaids that work continuously in the household are counted as working 12 hours per day.

Comparability — Italy [top]

The 2001 question asks how many hours a person actually worked in the week preceding the census, whereas the 2011 question asks for the usual number of hours worked. In 2001, if the respondent was absent from work the previous week due to vacation, illness, or some other form of leave, they were instructed to refer to their usual hours worked. In both years, respondents were instructed to include unpaid overtime work hours, and responses were top-coded at 71 hours.

The universe includes only persons 15+ who worked in the preceding week in 2001, while it includes persons 15+ who were ever employed in 2011.

Comparability — Panama [top]

The sample reports hours worked last week, not usual hours worked.

Comparability — Romania [top]

All samples report hours worked during the reference week (the week prior to the start of the census), not usual hours worked. There are minor universe changes between samples.

Comparability — United Kingdom [top]

The 2001 sample excluded persons older than 74 years from the question.

The 1991 sample is top-coded at 81 hours; 2001 is top-coded at 80 hours.

The 1991 sample combines 71 to 80 hours into a single category, coded in HRSMAIN to the 75.

Comparability — Uruguay [top]

The 2006 sample reports usual hours worked in the primary job.
