B. Section II - Characteristics

These questions, 5 to 12 provide some basic characteristics about the individual; and are to be answered for all members of the population. (Enumerators assigned to institutions will be given special instructions for this and the following sections).

34. Question 5 - Relationship to head of household

Seven types of relationship are specified here. These are:

(1) Head
(2) Spouse or common law partner
(3) Child of head or spouse
(4) Other relative
(5) Boarder or boarder's relatives
(6) Domestic employee or relatives
(7) Other non-relative

If the individual is the head of the household, as defined earlier in the manual, then mark the space ===== head.

Spouse or common law partner

This refers to a wife (or husband) if they are legally married, or to a common law partner. By common law partner is meant a woman (or man) who lives with the head of the household and assumes the domestic responsibilities of a married partner.

Child of head or spouse

This includes the children (natural or adopted) of the head of the household and/or of the spouse or common law partner. Children in this context refer not only to minors, but to all off spring regardless of age. On the other hand, not all children in the household are necessarily children of the head or spouse.
[p.12]

Other relative of head or spouse

All other members of the household who are related to either the head of the household or his spouse or partner, or both, should be included in this category e.g. Uncle, Aunt, Nephew, Niece, Cousin, Brother, Sister.

Boarder or boarder's relatives

If a boarder and/or his relative fulfill the requirements for membership of the household, he should be classified under this head and scored accordingly.

Domestic employees or relatives

All domestic employees and/or their relatives who live with the main household and are considered members of that household must be "scored" under this head.

Other

All other members of the household who are not identified in the six categories given above must be scored under this head.
