Description
This variable indicates the person's marital status, including the number of wives for polygamous men and the number of wives or spousal rank for polygamous women. Empirical examination of this variable indicates that in about two-thirds of households with polygamous unions, wives' values on this variable reflect the total number of wives in their union, whereas in about one-third of such households, wives' values reflect their spousal ranks.
