Comparability — General

The Austria 1971-2001, Argentina 2001, Costa Rica 2011, Dominican Republic 1970, France 2006, Hungary 2001-2011, Jamaica 2001, Poland 2002-2011, Puerto Rico 1970-1990, Romania 2002-2011, Spain 2001, St. Lucia 1991, and Uruguay 2006 samples asked about de facto status as a separate question in addition to legal marital status. These are the only samples for which CONSENS provides unique information. In other samples we do not know the legal marital status of persons in consensual unions. CONSENS in those samples is simply a recode of the marital status variable, MARST.

It is possible to identify consensual unions in the 2001 Greece, 1970 and 1990 Hungary, 1991-2011 Ireland, 2001 Italy, 2000 and 2005 Puerto Rico, 2002 Slovenia, 1990-2015 U.S., 1962-1975 France, and all United Kingdom samples using RELATE. However, only unions involving the head and an "unmarried partner" can be identified.

Comparability — Argentina [top]

The data for 2001 are inferred from questions on cohabitation and marital status.

Comparability — Belarus [top]

In the 1999 and 2009 samples, information on consensual union status is collected as part of the marital status question.

Comparability — Benin [top]

Consensual unions are reported in Benin in the census question regarding marital status.

Comparability — Botswana [top]

In all samples, information on consensual union status is collected as part of the marital status question. It is available for non-institutionalized household residents only.

The universe for the 2001 and 2011 samples are non-institutionalized residents who are in unions, while the universe for the 1991 sample is persons who are in a union only.

Comparability — Brazil [top]

In Brazil, consensual union is part of the question, or questions, on marital status.

Comparability — Canada [top]

The 2011 census asked about de facto marital status only. The legal marital status of individuals in consensual unions is unknown.

Comparability — Fiji [top]

Consensual unions are identified in the census question on marital status.

Comparability — France [top]

In 2006, this variable is constructed using information on whether a person was in a union and whether they were formally married. Because the category legally married includes persons who are separated, cohabitating persons who are separated from a marriage cannot be identified and are coded as currently married.

Comparability — Greece [top]

The 2011 sample distinguishes "registered union" as part of the marital status question.

Comparability — Guatemala [top]

Consensual unions are identified in the census question on marital status.

Comparability — Honduras [top]

In Honduras, consensual union is part of the question on marital status.

Comparability — Jamaica [top]

In 2001, cohabitation status was collected for all unmarried adults and is available in CONSENS. In earlier years, the universe on consensual unions was so restrictive that this information is not incorporated into CONSENS. The data are available in the unharmonized source variables: in 1982, for women ages 14 to 45 in JM1982A_0440; and in 1991, for all unmarried women in JM1991A_0412.

Comparability — Lesotho [top]

In 2006, the census question on marital status identifies persons in consensual unions.

Comparability — Liberia [top]

Consensual unions are identified only in 2008.

Comparability — Mali [top]

Consensual unions are identified only in 2009.

Comparability — Mexico [top]

In all samples, information on consensual union status is collected as part of the marital status question.

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

Consensual unions are identified beginning in 2008 and the universe is comparable across sample. Note, the 2006-2009 samples also identify marriages of "mutual agreement" (as opposed to civil or customary marriages). These appear to be a type of marriage distinct from the informal unions identified in CONSENS and MARST and can be identified through the unharmonized source variables.

Comparability — Panama [top]

In Panama, consensual union is part of the question on marital status.

Comparability — Poland [top]

The 2002 and 2011 samples include separate questions on legal and de facto marital status.

Comparability — Romania [top]

In the 2002 and 2011 samples, consensual union status was asked as a separate question from marital status.

Comparability — Russia [top]

Consensual unions are identified in the census question on marital status.

Comparability — Saint Lucia [top]

In 1980, it is possible to identify women younger than age 46 who were in a consensual union. That information is not incorporated into CONSENS because the universe is restrictive, but data are available in the unharmonized source variable LC1980A_0437.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

Persons in institutions were not asked the question in 2007, and are thus out of the universe in that sample

Comparability — Togo [top]

Consensual unions are identified in the census question on marital status. In 2010, visitors were not asked their marital status, and are thus not in universe for CONSENS.

Comparability — Ukraine [top]

Ukraine distinguishes between persons in a registered marriage and those living with a partner in a marriage that has not been formally registered. These unregistered marriages are identified as cohabiting unions in CONSENS.

Comparability — Uruguay [top]

The 2006 and 2011 samples collect information on consensual unions in a variable separate from MARST.

Comparability — Zambia [top]

In 2000, CONSENS is available for all persons in a marital or consensual union. In 2010, the data are available only for visitors and members of the household who were present at the time of the census. No information is available prior to 2000.
