Description

SUBDISTUK identifies the registration subdistrict in Great Britain (England and Wales) where the household was enumerated.

Comparability — General

SUBDISTUK is only available for England and Wales. Registration subdistricts are the next geographic unit below registration districts DISTUK. Registration districts contain parishes. See year-specific parish variables, PARISHUK_1851, PARISHUK_1861, etc.

The relationship among different historical UK geographic units is described in separate files for England and Wales and Scotland.

In Scotland and the adjacent islands in the British seas there are no registration districts or registration subdistricts. Registration counties in Scotland (COUNTYUK) contain parishes.

SUBDISTUK is harmonized according to the subdistrict name and does not account for boundary changes over time. Subdistricts may have similar or identical names across districts and counties. SUBDISTUK should be used with DISTUK and COUNTYUK to identify unique registration subdistricts.
