Description

DISTUK identifies the registration district in Great Britain (England and Wales) where the household was enumerated.

Comparability — General

DISTUK is only available for England and Wales. Registration districts are the next geographic unit below registration counties COUNTYUK. Registration districts in England and Wales are contained in the variable SUBDISTUK. Registration districts contain parishes. See year-specific parish variables, PARISHUK_1851, PARISHUK_1861, etc.

The relationship among different historical UK geographic units is described in separate files for England and Wales and Scotland.

In Scotland and the adjacent islands in the British seas there are no registration districts. Registration counties in Scotland (COUNTYUK) contain parishes.

DISTUK is harmonized according to the district name and does not account for boundary changes over time. Districts may have similar or identical names across counties. DISTUK should be used with COUNTYUKto identify unique registration districts.
