Description

SAMPUNIT identifies the type of sampling unit used to create the census or survey sample. The sampling unit is each element to be selected from a population to create a sample.

This variable represents up to two stages of sampling. The primary sampling unit can be a person, household, dwelling, or geographic area; and, if a geographic area was selected in the first stage of sampling, then the secondary sampling unit can be a person, household, or dwelling.

Comparability — General

The variable is generally comparable across samples. The standard census sample has a single-stage systematic selection, where the primary sampling unit is the household or the dwelling. Some samples have sampling done in two or three stages. For sampling units referring to geographic areas, the specific geography used depends on the census or survey, but these include concepts such as census blocks, segments, or enumeration areas.

The 2004 and 2013 samples are stratified with clusters. In the 2004 sample, the primary sampling unit is village. In 2013 and 2019, the primary sampling units are enumeration areas, and the secondary sampling units are households.

For Canada 1971-2001, the original long-form sample was a selection of households, but the samples in the dissemination are persons not organized into households.

The sampling method is unknown for the 1960, 1971, and 1981 samples, so the sampling unit is inferred from the file structure -- persons not organized into households in 1960 and 1971, and persons organized into households in 1981.

In most samples, the sampling units consisted of private dwellings and individuals for group quarters. The 2001 sample includes private dwellings and individuals for community populations (group quarters) and special populations (mobile homes, homeless, and sailors).

The sampling units of the 2004 sample include private households or persons in collective households.

The primary sampling units selected in the Mexico samples vary through time.

The primary sampling unit in 1960 is persons; the 1970, 1990, and 2005 samples selected either dwellings or households.

The 1995, 2000, 2010, and 2015 samples are stratified with clusters. The 1995 and 2000 samples use units derived from the geostatistical basic areas (AGEB). The 2010 sample uses complete geographical areas, which correspond either to blocks or localities. The 2015 and 2020 samples use groups of blocks as primary sampling units.

For the 1981 and 1991 samples, the sampling units are dwelling-level for private dwellings and person-level for collective dwellings.

In 1996, people who do not share food or other essentials are enumerated as separate households.
