Description

NMOTHERS is a constructed variable indicating the number of mothers -- of persons of any age -- within a household.

NMOTHERS is constructed using the IPUMS-International pointer variable MOMLOC (mother's location in the household).

Comparability — General

This variable is comparable across samples, but there is variation in the specific information used in the creation of MOMLOC, the variable from which NMOTHERS is derived.

The variable NFATHERS is a comparable variable that counts the number of fathers in the household.
