Description
NFATHERS is a constructed variable indicating the number of fathers -- of persons of any age -- within a household.
NFATHERS is constructed using the IPUMS-International pointer variable POPLOC (father's location in the household).
Comparability — General
This variable is comparable across samples, but there is variation in the specific information used in the creation of POPLOC, the variable from which NFATHERS is derived.
The variable NMOTHERS is a comparable variable that counts the number of mothers in the household.
No household constructed variables are available for the individual-level samples that do not contain entire households of persons.
Family interrelationship variables were constructed using different algorithms in historical samples than those used for modern samples. In pre-1950 samples, surnames are often available and help determine relationships. The historical samples also rely more on record order when there is uncertainty determining the relationship.
