Comparability — General
The samples differ in terms of the universes and whether the data were combined into year intervals.
Only persons who moved within the last five years have responses for 2001, 2007, and 2016 South Africa and Colombia. Only persons who moved within the last ten years have responses for 2011 South Africa. The responses are top-coded at five and ten years, respectively in those samples.
The U.S. and Puerto Rico data were all reported as somewhat different year intervals. The data are coded to the first year of the interval range for each sample. See the codes page.
The data for Colombia, South Africa, and Spain were reported in calendar years, which we converted to number of years at the residence. Because the censuses were not taken on January 1, the data are somewhat distorted by this conversion. For those samples that provided the calendar month of the last move, this information was used for a more accurate calculation. See the unharmonized source variables for the original values.
For many samples, MIGYRS1 records when the person moved to their current locality of residence, rather than the specific dwelling.
Comparability — Brazil [top]
Only persons living in municipalities encompassing both rural and urban zones were asked this question.
Comparability — Colombia [top]
The data were reported as calendar year. Only persons who moved within the last five years have responses.
Comparability — France [top]
The 2011 France sample reports the number of years a household has lived in their current dwelling, but does not have person-level data. See the unharmonized variable FR2011A_0024.
Comparability — Puerto Rico [top]
The universe for the 1970 sample includes persons who ever moved. The 1980-2005 samples include persons who are in private dwellings and have ever moved. The 2010 to 2020 samples are reported by the household head.
The data for each sample is grouped into year ranges. The data are top-coded at 21+ years for 1970, 31+ years for 1980 and 1990, and 30+ years for 2005 to 2020. The data are recoded to the first year of the range in each sample. See the sample-specific source variables for the original values.
Comparability — South Africa [top]
The variable differs considerably between samples. All persons who ever moved have a response in 1996. Only persons who moved within the last five calendar years have a response in 2001. Only persons who were not residing in institutions and did not live in the same dwelling 5 years ago have a response in 2007. Only persons who were not residing in institutions and did not live in the same dwelling 10 years ago have a response in 2011. Only persons who moved since October of 2011 (roughly equivalent to the last 5 years) have a response in 2016.
In 1996 and 2001, the source variable records the calendar year the person moved to their current dwelling. We have converted that into number of years at the residence. The 1996 and 2001 censuses were taken on October 10, so our conversion from calendar year distorts the time at residence by two and a half months.
In 2007, 2011, and 2016, the source variable records the calendar year and month since the last move, so our conversion more accurately records years residing in their current location. The month since last move was unknown for about 30 thousand cases in 2011 and for a few cases in 2016, thus creating a minor distortion for them.
Comparability — Suriname [top]
The 2012 sample refers to the years that a person has been living at their current address. The data are top-coded at 70+ years.
Comparability — United States [top]
The universe for the 1960-1970 samples includes only persons who ever moved. For later samples, only household heads answered the question, but they all responded whether they ever moved or not.
The data for each sample was originally grouped into year ranges. The data are recoded to the first year of the range in each sample. The data are top-coded at 21+ years for 1960, 1970, and 2010, 31+ years for 1980, 1990 and 2000, 30+ years for 2005, 2015, and 2020. The data are recoded to the first year of the range in each sample. See the sample-specific source variables for the original values.
