Comparability — General

There are many changes in the number, borders, and names of municipalities over time. Although the samples are fairly comparable, a number of new municipalities were created between 1981 and 2002, many of which merged again by 2010. In addition, Santo Domingo province did not exist in 1981 so there are no municipalities for that province in the 1981 sample. The migration variable is available for 1981, 2002, and 2010 samples only.

There are a few notable name changes:

Distrito Nacional in 1981 and 2002 is Santo Domingo de Guzman by 2010.
Hostos in 1981 and 2002 is Eugenio Maria de Hostos by 2010.
Hato Mayor del Rey in 1981 is Hato Mayor by 2010.
Esperalvillo in 2002 is Peralvillo by 2010.
Guerra in 2002 is San Antonio de Guerra by 2010.

The 2010 sample names for these five municipalities are the ones used here.
