Usual place of residence 5 years before the census refers to the geographical location where the person documented in the census usually lived in the year 2007. The usual place of residence five years before the census may or may not be in the same place where the census interview is occurring.

The question about usual place of residence 5 years before the census has the following multiple-choice options:

This question deals with the usual place where each person was living 5 years before the census. If a person was temporarily away from home 5 years before the census, record the place where the person was living, not the place the person was temporarily visiting. Like in 106 above, if someone living in Ngamiland was away from home visiting friends or relatives in Francistown, or if someone was in hospital in Francistown, do not record the place of usual living 5 years ago as Francistown. Use the code for Ngamiland instead. If a child was attending boarding school in Gaborone, 5 years ago and was always with his family in Southern district during the school holiday, then the child's place of usual living a 5 years ago was Gaborone; he was merely visiting Southern at this time 5 years ago.

For children who are under 5 years of age at the time of enumeration, enter 000 (because this time 5 years ago they had not been born).

For a person who is living in the same housing unit now as 5 years, enter 001. For a person who was living elsewhere in the locality (as indicated on the top of the questionnaire) 5 years, enter 002.

For a person who was living somewhere else in Botswana, write down the name of the district (as described for A8), and also look up the appropriate code from the Village/Country List as above. Enter the code which is preceded by a "6" below the name of the district you have just written.

For a person who was living outside Botswana 5 years before the census, enter the name and code number for the country, prefixing the code by 7, e.g., if Lesotho, enter code 703. Lastly write 999 if the place of usual residence was not known 5 years ago.

Example: In column A7 below, Maungo, Mothusi and Mmantsheledi were born in Kauxwi while the rest were born in Tsootsha. The enumerator wrote the district for Mothus, because he was living elsewhere in Botswana. The same situation applies for A9 and A10. For example in column A8 the sample questionnaire below shows that Maungo, Itumeleng, Mbigi and Mmantsheledi usually live in this household, so they are coded 001, Mothusi usually lives in Okavango at a boarding school.

Still on the portion of the completed questionnaire below parental survival in columns A11 and A12 were recorded code 2 for those whose biological fathers or mothers are dead. Note that for Itumeleng, Balisa and Mbigi, the respondent who is their grandmother does not know whether the fathers of these children are still alive or dead as she has never known them.

Important: There are communes that are in different parts of the country and have a similar name. In another canton: if the reference person lived in a different canton five years ago from the current one, mark this alternative, request the name of the canton and province and note the corresponding information. If he/she does not know the canton, note the name of the district or the population center or some other reference that can help to determine the correct canton. In this case you must also mark the province. Proceed to question 20.

In another country: if the reference person was found living habitually abroad five years ago, mark this option, and then request and mark the name of the country, if it appears on the list. If the country is not on the list, note it in the blank spaces.

Help the informer, if necessary, to remember related events like births or children's ages, end of school classes, town parties, family or social festivals, or whichever other event that is useful.

These questions allow us to identify the state and municipality of the Mexican Republic where the person resided 5 years ago, that is to say, in March 2015.

In addition, it distinguishes those who resided in the United States of America or in another country at that time. It is applied to people who are of 5 years of age or older.

If the person mentions that he/she does not remember, help him/her by providing information about related events such as births or ages of children, end of school years, village festivals, family or social celebrations, or any other useful event.

In order to identify whether that answer was true or not, ask the respondent the question of column 19 (Where was the living place of [the respondent] five years ago?) and if confirmed it was this district, circle the reference 1. But while asking question of column 17 (How long has [the respondent] been living here?) if the response is less than five years, then the person was in another district or country five years ago. Therefore, to confirm whether this answer is true or not, ask the question of column 19 (Where was the living place of [the respondent] five years ago?) and if was another district, circle the reference 2. Again, ask whether that living place of another district was a VDC or municipality and if it was a VDC, circle the reference 1, and if it was a municipality, circle the reference 2.

If the living place five years ago was another country, circle the reference 3 and also write the name of that country.

In this question, it has been asked the living place exactly 5 years ago from the date of enumeration. That is, if the remuneration day is 2068/03/04, then ask the person where he was living on 2063/03/03. Here also living place means the usual living place of a person.

Relationship between column 17 and column 19
In question of column 17 (how long [has the respondent] been living here) if the response is five years or more than five years, then the response automatically would be "in this district" and circle the reference 1. If the response is less than five years, it is understood that the person was in another district or another country five years ago. Confirm this and if it was another district, circle the reference 2 and specify the name of the district, and again to specify whether it was VDC or municipality, circle the reference 1 VDC for VDC and reference 2 Municipality for municipality, respectively.
