Description

MIG2_5_IL indicates the subdistrict in Israel in which the person lived 5 years ago. Migration subdistrict codes from MIG2_5_IL are compatible with codes from GEO2_IL, apart from Central District which is consolidated to a single area because of inconsistent geographic boundaries.

Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.

Comparability — General

Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially-defined arrondissements have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring subdistricts.
In the Northern district, sub-district Nazeret is merged with its neighbor Yizreel (Afula). In the Central District Tel-Aviv, Middle and Outer ring districts are coded under District Central, subdistrict unknown (376004099). Click on the Source Variables tab for more details.
Israel has three regions that are in dispute with its neighboring states. The disputed areas are the results of the Third Arab–Israeli War in 1967.
Disputed regions:

  • No Man's Land along the Israel/Palestine border.
  • Judea, Samaria, and Gaza Areas (in dispute with Palestine) are coded as 072072.
  • Golan in the northern part (in dispute with Syria) is coded as 071071.
  • The 1972 and 1983 samples include the Sinai Peninsula, a territory occupied from Egypt which was returned in 1979, this areas is coded as NIU and is different from the geographical area in GEO2_IL.

Boundary changes for MIG2_5_IL are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time. The harmonized shapefile does not take into account the boundary changes in disputed regions.
