Description
MIG1_P_TH indicates the person's province of previous residence in Thailand, if they changed province within the last 5 years.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
Boundary changes:
- In 1972, Phra Nakhon and Thon Buri provinces merged to form Bangkok Metropolis
- In 1972, Yasothon split from Ubon Ratchathani province
- In 1982, Mukdahan province split from Nakhon Phanom
- In 1993, Sa Kaeo split from Prachin Buri province
- In 1993, Amnat Charoen province split from Ubon Ratchathani
- In 1993, Nong Bua Lam Phu province split from Udon Thani
- In 1977, Chiang Rai province split from Phayao.
- Part of Chumphon province was in Ranong province in the 1970, 1980, and 1990 censuses.
- Parts of Surat Thani province was in Krabi province in the 1970, 1980, and 1990 censuses.
This variable differs from similar "previous residence" variables for most other countries in that it restricts the universe to moves within the last five years. It should also not be confused with variables reporting place of residence five years ago (i.e., at a specific point in time).
The universe varies in its treatment of children. Children under 5 who moved between provinces during their lifetime have responses in 1990 and 2000, but they are excluded in 1970 and 1980.
