Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG1_P_IR indicates the person's province of previous residence within Iran.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Users should be aware that the time frame for migration differs between sample years. The 2006 sample only includes persons who migrated within the previous 10 years, while 2011 only includes persons who migrated within the previous 5 years.
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
Boundary changes:
- In 2007, Ferdows county transferred from Razavi Khorasan to South Khorasan. The two units are reported separately in 2006; therefore, we maintain this separation in both years.
- In 2010, Alborz province split from Theran. Alborz contains Karaj, Nazarabad, and Savojbolagh counties.
There are no comparability issues. For the country of previous residence, see MIGCTRYP.
