Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:

Description
MIG1_P_FR indicates the person's region of residence on January 1 in the year of the previous census. For children not born by January 1 of the year of the last census, their region of birth is given.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Missing regions:
- The 1962, 1968, 1975, 1982, 1990, and 1999 samples are missing outside metropolitan France (i.e., oversea regions) of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, and La Reunion.
- The 1982 sample does not include Corse.
This variable is fully comparable across samples. The 1999 census identifies the outlying territories of non-metropolitan France.
The following dates apply to the relevant census years for MIG1_P_FR:
1962 census: Region of residence January 1, 1954.
1968 census: Region of residence January 1, 1962.
1975 census: Region of residence January 1, 1968.
1982 census: Region of residence January 1, 1975.
1990 census: Region of residence January 1, 1982.
1999 census: Region of residence January 1, 1990.
