Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Between 1991 and 2001, the following changes occurred:
- North region was terminated to form North East region.
- East Anglia changed its name to East of England.
Missing units:
- Northern Ireland is not included in the 1991 sample
Other changes:
- Inner London and Outer London are combined in MIG1_1_UK
The county of Cumbria was part of the North region in 1991, but part of North West in 2001. Therefore, the North and North West regions in 1991 are not equivalent to the 2001 regions North East and North West.
The counties of Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire were part of the Rest of South East in 1991, but part of East of England in 2001. Therefore, the East of England and South East regions in 1991 are not equivalent to the 2001 regions East Anglia and Rest of South East.
Non-resident students were not asked the question in 2001.
Children under age one receive the code of their nearest kin.
