Description

ELDCH gives the age of the person's oldest own child living in the household with her or him. These include all children linked to the person via the constructed IPUMS pointer variables MOMLOC or POPLOC -- mother's and father's location in the household.

ELDCH is top-coded at age 50 or older.

The variable is conceptually comparable across all samples, although there is variation in the specific information used to construct the underlying mother and father pointer variables.

Some samples do not provide single years of age. In those samples ELDCH provides the mid-point of the age range. See the variable AGE.

No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for the individual-level samples that do not contain entire households of persons.

If any of a person's own children have an AGE value of 999 ("Not reported/missing"), that person receives a value of 98 ("One or more children have unknown age") for ELDCH.
