Description

EDUCSN indicates the person's educational attainment in Senegal in terms of the level of schooling completed.

Comparability — General

The variable is comparable across samples. Senegal has a 6-4-3 system, comprising 6 years of primary school (initiation plus grades 1-5) and 7 years of secondary school, which is divided into a first cycle (grades 6-9) and second cycle (grades 10-12). Primary education typically begins at the age of 7.

In 2002 and 2013, the variable also distinguishes persons who have preschool or kindergarten as their highest education level completed. According to the census instructions, if a person only attended Koranic school in 1988-2013 or Arabic school in 2002, this is not considered as schooling and these responses should have been recorded as "none."

Technical or vocational studies are not explicitly identified, but those are considered schooling and recorded according to the equivalent number of years into secondary or higher education.

In 2013, among persons with higher education, the census questionnaire labels year 3 as "bachelor", year 4 as "master's", and year 5 as DEA (diploma of advanced studies), while the years 6-8 correspond to years 1-3 of the doctoral cycle. The labels indicate diplomas available in higher education, but the enumeration instructions do not provide additional information about these equivalences.
