Description

CHDEADMALE indicates the number of male children ever born to a woman who are no longer living. Stillbirths are not counted.

It is possible to calculate total child deaths for samples that have both the "Male children ever born" and "Male children surviving" variables. That is not done in CHDEADMALE, which includes only the samples that directly reported the information in the appropriate form.

Comparability — General

Some samples limit the universe to women of childbearing age or to ever-married women. Top-codes vary across samples.

For the number of deceased female children, see CHDEADFEM.

The universe differs across samples, with some restricting answers to ever married women, those who had children, or those of childbearing age.

Comparability — Botswana [top]

The 2001 and 2011 samples are top-coded at 5+.

Comparability — Cambodia [top]

The 2004 and 2019 data are top-coded at 7+, while the 2013 data are top-coded at 6+.

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

The 2007 sample includes only long-form respondents. Top-codes also differ slightly across samples.

Comparability — Honduras [top]

The data for 1988 are top-coded at 8+.

Comparability — Indonesia [top]

The universe changes significantly across samples, with differences in marital status and age requirements.

Comparability — Kenya [top]

The 1979 questionnaire was directed to females age 12+, but the universe in the sample data is females age 15+. There are a large proportion of missing cases. In the later samples, the universe is females age 12+ who ever gave birth.

Comparability — Laos [top]

The 2005 and 2015 data are top-coded at 6+, while the 1995 data are top-coded at 7+.

Comparability — Lesotho [top]

The 1996 sample is top-coded at 6+; 2006 is top-coded at 4+.

Comparability — Myanmar [top]

The 2014 sample is top-coded at 9+.

Comparability — Nepal [top]

The universe is restricted to ever-married women. The data are top-coded at 6+.

Comparability — Papua New Guinea [top]

The 1980 sample is top-coded at 3+; 2000 is top-coded at 5+.

Comparability — Sierra Leone [top]

The 2015 sample is top-coded at 10+ children.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 sample is top-coded at 5+.

Comparability — Suriname [top]

The 2004 sample is top-coded at 3+.

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

The data are top-coded at 12+ in 2002, but no top-codes are created in 1988 or 2012.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2014 sample is top-coded at 9+.

Comparability — Vietnam [top]

The 2019 sample is top-coded at 3+ children.

Comparability — Zambia [top]

The universe differs across each sample. The 1990 sample restricts the universe to women age 12 or older. The 2000 sample limits the universe to women age 12 or older with children ever born. The 2010 sample asked the question to present women age 12 or older who ever had a live birth. The 1990 and 2000 enumeration instructions indicate that this question should have been asked only of present household members and visitors, but DEADMALE is reported for almost all absent household members; they are included in the universe.

Top-codes also differ.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The data are top-coded at 5+.
