P5) Place of birth

This is the place where the person was effectively born, and not necessarily the place mentioned on his or her ID card. Ask the following question:

"In which arrondissement, commune or country were you born?"

Record the name of the "Commune", followed by the letter "C", or the name of the "Arrondissement" of birth for people born in Senegal. If the name of the "Arrondissement" is not known, record the name of the "Département", followed by the letter "D". If it is not known, record the name of the "Region", followed by the letter "R".

B07. Place of birth

This is the place where the person was effectively born, and not necessarily the place mentioned on his or her ID card. Ask the following question: "In which rural community, or in which country were you born?"

Record the name of the [urban] "Commune", followed by the letter "C", or the name of the [rural] "Communaute rurale", followed by the letter "CR". If the name of the "Communaute rurale" is not known, write the name of the District (Arrondissement) of birth, followed by the letter "A". If the name of the District is not known, record the name of the Department, followed by the letter "D". If it is not known, record the name of the "Region", followed by the letter "R".

Example: A person was born in the Thies Commune: record "Thies C". If the person was born in the Thies Department: record "Thies D". If the person was born in the Thies Region, without knowing in which District or Department: record "Thies R".

If the person was born abroad, record the name of the country of birth. Example: "France" for a person born in France, "The Gambia" for a person born in Gambia.

Note: For the persons born outside Senegal, give the name of the country of birth, and not the name of the place of birth in that country.

4.2. Part B: individual characteristics

B09: place of birth
This is the place of residence of the registered mother at the time of birth and not necessarily the place mentioned on her identity card. Ask the following question:
''In which rural community, municipality (In Dakar and in Thiès, there are arrondissement municipalities.) or country were you born?''
Enter the name of the municipality followed by the letter C or the rural community of birth for people born in Senegal. If the name of the municipality/rural community is not known, enter the name of the arrondissement followed by the letter A. If the name of the arrondissement is not known, enter the name of the department followed by the letter D. If the latter is not known, enter the name of the region followed by the letter R. Record only the name of the locality if the person does not know the administrative unit to which the locality belongs.

Example: a person was born in the municipality of Diourbel, register Diourbel C. If the person was born in the department of Diourbel, the name of the rural community is not known, record Diourbel D. If the person was born in the Region of Diourbel without knowing in which department, enter Diourbel R.
If the person was born abroad, enter the name of the country of birth. Example France for a person born in France, Gambia for a person born in the Gambia.
NB: For the specific cases of the regions of Thiès and Dakar, put Dakar City, Pikine City, Guédiawaye City and Thiès City instead of Dakar C or Thiès C.
For people born outside Senegal, give the name of the country of birth and not the name of a locality in that country.
