BPL2_MW indicates the person's traditional authority (TA) of birth in Malawi. Birthplace department codes from BPL2_MW are compatible with codes from GEO2_MW.

Comparability — General

This variable is only available for the 1987 sample.

Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially defined departments have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring departments.

Boundary changes for BPL2_MW are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
