Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
BPL1_KH indicates the person's province of birth within Cambodia. Birthplace province codes for BPL1_KH are compatible with codes for GEO1_KH.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
Boundary changes:
- There were shifts in province boundaries between Siem Reap and Oddar Meanchey between 1998 and 2005.
- Phnom Penh province expanded its borders, absorbing parts of Kandal province between 2009 and 2011.
- Preah Sihanouk province expanded its borders, absorbing parts of Koh Kong province in 2009.
- Tbong Khmum province, formerly a central district of Kampong Cham province, was created in 2013.
In the 2013 sample, this question was only asked of present persons. In all other samples, the universe is all persons.

9 ___ Birth Place
If in another village, give name of district of that village and write name of province within brackets.
If outside Cambodia, write name of country.]
Column 9: Birth Place
89. If a person reports to have been born in this village, record Code 1 in the blank space (not in shaded boxes which are reserved for coding in office). Persons reporting to have been born in this village are those born in the same village in which you are conducting your enumeration. The birth place of a person is the place of usual residence of the person's mother at the time of birth. For example, for a person born in (a) a hospital or maternity home outside the usual place of residence of the mother or (b) mother's village or (c) some other place where the mother had gone for a short visit, the birthplace of this person will be the place in which the mother normally lives and not the place of the hospital, the mother's village or place of visit. If however, the mother's length of stay outside her place of usual residence was one month or more or the mother had the intention of staying in the new place for one month or more the "actual place of physical birth" will be considered as the birthplace of the person in question. For example, suppose Bossadine who normally resides with her husband in Bak Kheng went to Kandal Koh to deliver her child in her mother's house, and returned within 15 days the birthplace of the child will be Bak Kheng and not Kandal Koh.
89.2 For those persons reporting to have been born outside the village in which you are conducting your enumeration, record name of the district in which the village of birth falls and also write name of province of that district within brackets. For those born outside Cambodia write name of the country of birth.
