Description

POLYMAL indicates if a man had more than one wife linked to him in the constructed IPUMS variable SPLOC -- Spouse's Location in Household.

The point of POLYMAL is to facilitate using SPLOC in samples that identify polygamy. Some statistical matching procedures expect to find only one matching record for each subject record.

Comparability — General

POLYMAL is comparable across all samples. POLY2ND is a corresponding variable for women which identifies the woman as a second or higher order wife linked to a husband in polygamous unions.

POLYGAM identifies samples that provide information on polygamous unions.
