Description

ENUMTYPE indicates whether the enumeration was de jure or de facto. The definitions used follow the Manual for Population and Housing Censuses from the United Nations.

De jure refers to enumeration of household residents at the location where they usually reside, regardless of where they may be during the census or survey date.

De facto enumeration indicates that household residents were enumerated at the location where they were found on the census or survey date, rather than their usual residence.

Comparability — General

ENUMTYPE is generally comparable across all samples. Variability may exist from one census year to another in some country samples. That is, earlier samples may be either de jure or de facto, while later samples could be both de jure and de facto.

Some samples are simultaneously de jure and de facto, when both absent residents and visitors are enumerated in each household. That is, present persons would include (count) visitors and/or immigrants, while absent persons would include (count) emigrants. For samples that include both de jure and de facto population, users can refer to RESIDENT to identify persons who are present residents, absent residents, visitors, or de facto population.

Comparability — Bangladesh [top]

The 1991, 2001, and 2011 samples used a modified de facto approach where all individuals except for night duty persons were enumerated on census night.

Comparability — Brazil [top]

The 1960 and 1970 samples are both de jure and de facto, while later samples are de jure only.

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

Present and absent persons, and emigrants were enumerated in the 1985, 1996, and 2006 samples.

Comparability — Cambodia [top]

The enumeration type changed throughout time. The 1998, 2008, and 2018 samples are de facto. The 2004 and 2013 samples are both de jure and de facto.

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

The 1984, 1994, and 2007 samples are mainly de jure; however, information regarding age, sex, and relationship to household head was also collected for visitors.

Comparability — Indonesia [top]

The enumeration type changed throughout the census years with the main approach being de jure. The 1990, 2000, and 2010 samples used both approaches with de jure for permanent residents and de facto for non-permanent residents.

Comparability — Jamaica [top]

The 1982 and the 1991 samples are both de jure and de facto. The 2001 sample is de jure only.

The 2004 sample is de facto but also including Jordanians who have resided abroad for less than one year.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

The 1987 and 1998 samples are de facto only. The 2008 census is both de jure and de facto, while the 2018 census is de jure.

Comparability — Netherlands [top]

The 1960 sample includes people with usual residence in a municipality based on the population register. The 1971 sample is a modified de jure where foreigners were counted when they are entered in the population register.

The 1973 sample is de facto, while the 1981 and 1998 samples are both de jure and de facto.

Comparability — Papua New Guinea [top]

The 1980 sample is considered de facto except for villagers visiting urban areas.

The 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 samples are de jure, except for students.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2002 sample is de facto for all respondents, while de jure only applies heads only.
