Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:

Description
BPLNI indicates the person's department of birth within Nicaragua.
Comparability — General
BPLNI is comparable across samples. In two instances departments are merged in the data to make the units consistent over time: Atlántico Norte and Atlántico Sur, and León and EstelÃ. The unharmonized source variables for specific sample years allow users to unmerge those provinces. BPLNI codes match those used in department of residence, DEPTNI.
For the country of birth of foreign-born persons, see BPLCOUNTRY.
