This variable indicates whether the respondent lived in a metropolitan area five years ago. It also indicates whether persons who lived in a metropolitan area five years ago resided in the largest city/cities ("the central city") in the metropolitan area. Metropolitan areas consist of a large city and the surrounding economically-integrated counties.
