[] 1 garbage truck
[] 2 thrown in a hole or buried
[] 3 burned
[] 4 thrown in a vacant lot
[] 5 thrown in a river, gorge, or sea
[] 6 other

This question refers to the different ways of eliminating waste produced at home daily.

Garbage truck: this service can be provided with a garbage truck or compacting truck, property of the canton municipality or by a private garbage collector whenever this service is contracted and paid for by the municipality. This does not include private services contracted directly by the people of the community.

Thrown in a hole or buried: this option should be assigned when the garbage is deposited in a hole with the objective of remaining outside the dwelling. In general when the hole fills with garbage, this is covered, and the buried garbage burned.

[p. 120]

Burned: when the garbage is deposited in a hole or recipient with the objective of burning it in order to eliminate it. If it is burned and then buried, consider this to be burned.

Thrown in a vacant lot: when the garbage is deposited in a lot or unoccupied terrain, whenever this is close to the dwelling.

Thrown in a river, gorge, or sea: when the garbage is thrown or deposited in some river, gorge, or sea, whenever this is close to the dwelling.

Other: this includes for example, directly depositing garbage in the garbage cans or municipal dumps, taking to waste centers, or when the garbage is collected by a private contracted service and paid directly by the people of the community.

H06 [Household] Waste disposal
Daily household activity always gives rise to the creation of garbage and waste which must be gotten rid of as quickly as possible to maintain a healthy environment.

In large cities, household can use a "refuse collection" service to get rid of household waste; they can pay for a "private garbage collection" service if one is available. They can also, and this is generally recommended in certain areas, dig holes to bury the household waste; this procedure is called "burial." Or [a household can] burn the garbage to ash: this is "incineration." In many cases, the household gets rid of its household waste by piling it willy-nilly along transportation routes or throwing it into the bushes or any uninhabited space: this is "disposal in nature." Households located on waterways (rivers, creeks, etc.) and on the ocean often get rid of their household waste by throwing it either into the "waterway" or into the "ocean." These are the many solutions used by households to get rid of the household waste they create. Thus we request that you ask the following question: "What do you normally do to get rid of the household waste created by your household?" To record the answer, simply circle the number of the corresponding code.

5.27 Question 3.9: Disposal of solid waste
This question refers to method of disposal of solid waste (garbage) by the household. In cases where the household uses more than one method of disposal, determine from the respondent the main method of disposal.

Regular public collection system: Refers to a collection system where garbage is collected on a regular basis i.e. during a specified time period such as twice weekly or once monthly, by the government or a government related agency: for example, Metropolitan Parks and Markets, Central Parks and Markets, etc.

Irregular public collection system: Refers to a collection system where garbage is collected by the government or a government related agency but not on a regular basis i.e. collection is done in an unpredictable manner.

Private collection system: This is scored where a private company is authorized to collect garbage.

Burn: This applies when the household's main disposal of garbage is by burning.

Bury: This refers to the disposal of garbage by burying in a hole in the ground. This may be done in one's own yard or at some other location.

Dumping in sea/river/pond/gully: This describes the disposal of garbage into the sea, river, pond or gully.

Dumping in own yard: This refers to the disposal of garbage by throwing in the back yard. It should not be confused with burying, however which involves the digging a hole.

Dumping at a municipal site: This applies to instances where garbage is taken by the respondent to a site identified by local authorities as a dump.

Other dumping: Include here all other types of dumping not identified.

Other method of garbage disposal: Score this for all other types of disposal methods not mentioned previously.

20. Waste disposal
This question allows you to known how the population dispose of garbage generated in the dwelling. Read the question mentioning each option until you obtain an affirmative answer and circle the corresponding code.

[Figures are omitted]

  • The first option refers to the garbage pickup service.
  • The second option identifies whether there are containers or tanks around the dwelling.
  • Burning or burying garbage are habits of populations when they do not have a garbage pickup service, or for some reason when they do not use that service. In some places, it is common to burn or bury the trash and these can be performed around the dwelling or away from it, as well these practices can be done individually or with neighbors.
  • The public waste dump is a public land or piece of land intended to receive and accumulate garbage in large quantities; generally it is located outside cities and is identified by the large amount of waste that it receives.
  • If the informants declare two or more ways to dispose of garbage, ask for the method more recurrent or for account for more garbage. Informants should determine it, but if they are unable to do, select the one that appears first in the answer choices.
  • If the answer is "the trash is picked up by a truck or cart designed for trash" or "is left in a container or deposit", go to question 21 "Separation". However, if the answer is different, record the corresponding code 3 to 6, and pass to question 22 "Separation and reuse".

15. Extended questionnaire
This section of the questionnaire contains the questions you must apply in the households you have registered as: Single house on the land, house sharing land with other(s); duplex house; apartment in a building; housing unit in neighborhood or tenement and housing unit in the rooftop room of a building. That is, with classes 1 to 6 of private housing unit class.

VII. Garbage
20. Separation and reuse
These questions allow us to know if the population separates their daily waste in their homes into organic and inorganic; if they separate some food scraps or waste to give to animals; if they separate waste to fertilize plants or gardens; if they separate PET (plastic), aluminum (cans) or paper (cardboard) to sell it, donate it, give it away or recycle it. In other words, they make it possible to identify waste separation and reuse practices in households.

[Figure omitted: image with text]

Read the question mentioning each type of separation and register the answers of the respondent.

The separation and reuse question is presented in the census manager as follows:

[Figure omitted: image with text]

[p. 257]

21. Garbage disposal
This question identifies the way in which people dispose of the garbage generated in their housing units.

[Figure omitted: image with text]

Read the question mentioning each option until you get an affirmative answer and select the corresponding code.

The first option refers to the household collection service, either by means of a special truck for this activity or by means of carts adapted by cleaning personnel or private individuals who are in charge of collecting the garbage produced by the population in their housing units.

[p. 258]

The second option identifies whether there are containers or deposits around the housing unit, or if there is a collective container or deposit in the building or group of housing units where garbage is deposited and where a truck or cleaning personnel picks it up.

Burning or burying garbage is a common practice among the population when there is no household garbage collection service or, for some reason, they do not use it. In some places, these are common practices and can be carried out around the housing unit or far from it, as well as individually or collectively.

[p. 259]

A public landfill is a property or land destined to receive and accumulate large quantities of garbage; it is generally located on the outskirts of population centers and is identified by a large amount of waste it receives. Circle this option when the residents of the housing unit throw garbage directly to these places.

The last option, dumped elsewhere, identifies when residents leave their garbage on the streets, vacant lots, ravines, crevices, rivers, and lakes, or dump it in the sea.

If the respondents state two or more ways of disposing of garbage, ask for the most recurrent or the one to where they throw the largest amount. The respondents should determine this, but if they are unable to do so, select the one that appears first in the response options.

The garbage disposal question is presented in the census manager as follows:

Question No. 17: How is garbage waste removed from this dwelling?
We want to investigate with this question the system generally used to eliminate garbage in the dwelling to measure possible sources of environmental pollution.
Consider the following definitions:
Public collection truck (circle 1): You will mark this option when the occupants of the dwelling put the garbage in front of their dwellings, so that collection units from the municipality transport them to crematories or places for their disposal.
[There is picture of a public collection truck.]
Private collection truck (circle 2): When the person pays a third party or private firm to remove trash from her dwelling.
[There is a picture of a private collection truck.]
[p. 83]
Incineration or burning (circle 3): When the dwelling disposes of garbage by burning it.
[There is a picture of garbage being incinerated.]
In an empty lot (circle 4): When the dwelling disposes of garbage by putting it in an empty land.

H10 Usual Manner of Garbage Disposal

The proportion of households with access to sanitary manner of garbage disposal provides knowledge of the environmental living conditions and is therefore essential for health planners in the formulation of plans and programs to improve general health conditions.

Inquire from the respondent the manner by which the household disposes its kitchen garbage such as left-over food, peelings of fruits and vegetables, fish and chicken entrails, etc. If the household has various ways of disposing its kitchen garbage, ask for the manner used most of the time.

Described below are some of the more common methods of disposal used in the country. Determine which of these methods best describes the practice of the household. Enter in the box the code of the response.

1 Picked up by service garbage truck - when the local government or a private contractor manages the systematic collection of garbage in the community through the use of garbage trucks/carts.

2 Dumping in individual pit (not burned) - when garbage is simply thrown in pits whether inside the yard or vacant lots and left to decay.

3 Burning - when the household dumps its garbage in an open space or pit and burns it.

4 Composting - when garbage is composted, that is, allowed to decay under controlled conditions and the composted materials are collected later for use as soil conditioner or fertilizer.

5 Burying - when the garbage is thrown in pit and then covered with soil.

6 Feeding to animals - when the garbage is given to animals as feed.

7 Others - if the household you are interviewing disposes its kitchen garbage in a manner different from those mentioned above (thrown in esteros, vacant lots, rivers, etc.)

E16: main method of disposal of household refuse
By household refuse, we mean waste from domestic household activity. Here we try to identify the main modes of disposal of this household garbage by encircling the codes of the appropriate modalities.
The AR circles the code:

- ''1'' if the household uses the services of a pickup truck
- ''2'' if it is using a carriage/cart
- ''3'' for disposal in an authorized depot
- ''4'' for disposal on an unauthorized site

For households that bury their garbage (the practice of pouring garbage into a hole, which is then closed), the AR will circle code ''5''. Code ''6'' is circled for households that incinerate their garbage (action to destroy waste by burning it). For cases different from the six (6) dealt with above, the AR will circle code ''8'' corresponding to ''other'' modality.
