Comparability — General
The variable TOILSHAR distinguishes the exclusive or shared use of the toilet, while TOILET indicates whether the household has access to one and the type of installation. Both TOILSHAR and TOILET include households without a toilet and are generally defined over a consistent universe of respondents.
For samples that provide information about two different types of toilets, households are classified as "exclusive" use if either of them is noted as "exclusive". Shared toilet facilities include those indicated as "communal" or belonging to a neighbor. Public toilets are generally classified as "no toilet". Some census questions do not ask about exclusive or shared use for specific types of toilets, which generally include "other" or "latrine"; these responses are classified as "has a toilet, not specified whether shared."
Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]
The 2006 sample does not identify whether the toilet is exclusive or shared for latrines or other types of toilet.
Comparability — Cameroon [top]
In 1987 and 2005, the flush toilet located inside is classified as exclusive, given that shared toilets are explicitly noted as "shared" or "common".
Comparability — Chile [top]
In 1960, 1970, and 1982, the census question asked whether the toilet is used exclusively by the household or shared with other households.
The 1960 sample is a sample of individuals, not households. Only heads of households have most household-level information.
Comparability — Colombia [top]
In 2005, some households report having a toilet but do not provide information indicating whether it is exclusive or shared, and are classified as "has toilet, not specified whether shared."
Comparability — Ecuador [top]
The variable is consistent across samples. The 1962 sample is a sample of individuals, not households. Only heads of households have most household-level information.
In 1962, 1974, 1982, 1990, and 2001, the census question about exclusive or shared use of the toilet does not include latrines.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The 1986, 1996, and 2006 samples report whether the household has a private or shared bathroom with a toilet, or a private or shared separate toilet. In TOILSHAR, households are considered to have a private toilet if either type is private.
Comparability — Ethiopia [top]
There are significant universe differences across samples: in 1984 and 1994 the question was asked only of urban households; in 2007 only long form recipients were asked the toilet question.
Comparability — Fiji [top]
The census question in the 1986 sample does not identify whether the toilet use is exclusive or shared for latrines and other toilet types; only "other" toilets are excluded from this question in 1996 and 2007.
Comparability — Ghana [top]
In 2000 and 2010, households that indicate using a "public" toilet facility are classified as having "no toilet."
Comparability — Guatemala [top]
The census question in 1981 excludes washable toilets and pit/latrines.
Comparability — Honduras [top]
The 1961 census is a sample of individuals, not households. Information is only available for households consisting of a head.
Comparability — Indonesia [top]
In 1971, 1990, 1995, and 2010, households that indicate using a "public" toilet facility are classified as having "no toilet." The census question in 1995 excludes dry latrines and other types of toilet.
The 1980 and 1985 samples have information about toilet facilities, but they could not be integrated into this variable, because they do not distinguish between households with shared toilet access and those without any toilet facilities.
Comparability — Malawi [top]
The 1987 sample indicates whether the toilet for the first dwelling of the household is exclusive or shared.
Comparability — Mongolia [top]
In 2020, the census question that indicates whether the toilet is of exclusive or shared use is limited to households answering the long form; for households responding the short form we only know whether they have a toilet or not.
Comparability — Philippines [top]
The census question in 1990, 2000, and 2010 excludes pits and other types of toilets.
Comparability — Puerto Rico [top]
In the 1970 and 1980 samples, the census question does not indicate whether the privy is of exclusive or shared use.
Comparability — Rwanda [top]
In 1991, 2002, and 2012, the data only indicates whether latrines are exclusive or shared, while the type of use is not specified for toilets that are flush or "other type".
Comparability — Thailand [top]
The census question in 1970, 1980, and 1990 excludes pits and other types of toilets.
Comparability — Trinidad and Tobago [top]
The number of households without a toilet is small in 1980-2000, while no households reported lacking a toilet in 2011.
