Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents

Comparability — General
The universe differs across countries.
Comparability — Kenya [top]
This variable identifies people who responded ârefugee or asylum seekerâ to the question of nationality. Stateless people, such as Galjeel, Shona, Wapemba, Pare, etc. are not counted as refugees in this variable.
Comparability — Kyrgyzstan [top]
Only persons who migrated since 1989 were to answer the question. Many of those migrants did not give a response. Some persons who migrated prior to 1989 did respond, although it is unknown how representative they are.
The census question speaks to both internal (within Kyrgyzstan) and external refugees.
Comparability — Palestine [top]
The samples are comparable. The 1997 and 2017 samples distinguish between registered and non-registered refugees, but the 2007 sample does not.
