Description
MUNICNO reports the municipality a household was located in. Municipalities are the next geographic unit below provinces in Norway. Other geography variables for Norway include GEO1_NO1801_1910 and COUNTYNO and TOWNNO for 1801.
The first two digits of MUNICNO indicate the province (GEO1_NO1801_1910) where a household was located.
If the third digit is 0, then the municipality is a town. See URBAN for more information on towns in Norway. This is excepting some cases in the Norway 1910 sample where the code ends in "00" -- these codes correspond to provinces, indicating no information on municipality within the province.
Comparability — General
The municipalities originated in 1837, based on the older parish structure. Over time, many parishes split into several municipalities. Further information is available at the Norwegian Historical Data Centre's website.
In the 1801 sample, municipalities are referred to as parish. For more information on the changing municipalities in Norway refer here .
