Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG1_P_MX indicates the person's state of previous residence within Mexico.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
For the Mexico surveys, MIG1_P_MX is only available in long form samples and hence not available for the 2007 (mx2007h) and 2008 (mx2007h) short form surveys. Persons who never migrated from their state of birth are included in the NIU category.
See also MIG1_5_MX for state of residence 5 years ago in other Mexican samples. For the previous country of residence of international migrants, see MIGCTRYP (country of previous residence).
