Comparability — General
The United States 1-in-100 national random sample consists only of the free population. The African-American slaves are not included in the dataset. Individual-level data on the 1850 slave population is available here.
State or territory names represent that state or territory's contemporary political boundaries in 1880. Territories whose state boundaries did not change between 1880 and admission receive the corresponding state code. These are Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Counties in the Dakota Territory are split between areas that ultimately became the states of North Dakota and South Dakota. An image of historical U.S. states and territories is available here.
All the United States censuses are taken on a de jure (usual place of residence) basis.
