Description

EDUCPY indicates the person's educational attainment in Paraguay in terms of the level of schooling completed.

Comparability — General

Paraguay had a reform in their education system in the mid 1990's:

  • Before the 1990's, the structure was 6-3-3, including 6 years of primary, 3 years of basic or middle, and 3 years of upper secondary (with academic and technical tracks).
  • After the 1990's, the structure is 9-3, including basic school education (grades 1-9 of EEB, by its acronym in Spanish) and the secondary level (grades 10-12, with academic and technical tracks). The basic education level (EEB) is composed of three cycles: grades 1-3 in the first cycle, grades 4-6 in the second cycle, and grades 7-9 in the third cycle.

The change in the education system is reflected in the codes for educational attainment only for 2002, which included grades 7-9 for primary. The technical track of secondary education is distinguished in 1962-1982, but not in other samples. Technical education implements a special curriculum with focus on training skilled workers for a specific occupation

Basic adult education is intended for persons who did not finish neither attend the basic school. This modality has three cycles, each one lasts one year. The minimum age of admission is 15 years old.

Post-secondary education (non-university) refers to teacher training institutes, police institutes, military institutes, technical higher institutes and higher institutes. It lasts from 2 to 4 years. Teacher training programs include the formation of teachers for various basic education levels and these programs last between 3 to 4 years. The type of post-secondary education available across the Paraguay samples differs over time: the 1962-1982 samples identify teacher training, while the 1992-2002 refer to post-secondary (or non-university).

Higher education is offered in universities, it includes bachelor degrees (4 to 6 years), graduate specialization courses (from 9 months to 1 year), master's degrees (2 years), and Ph.D. degrees (3 years).
