Description
EDUCMU indicates the person's educational attainment in Mauritius in terms of the level of schooling completed and the grades within that level.
Comparability — General
Mauritius has a 6-5-2 system, which consists of 6 years of primary (standard I-VI), 5 years of the lower secondary (form I-V), and 2 years of the upper secondary (lower and upper form VI).
Students take the Certification of Primary Education (CPE) examination at the end of standard VI as an entry requirement for secondary school. Pre-vocational is available in secondary schools for students not obtaining the CPE.
Secondary education has general and vocational tracks. The first cycle lasts 5 years and leads to the Brevet d'etudes du premier cycle (BEPC), School Certificate (SC), or equivalent. The second cycle lasts 2 years and leads to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), baccalaureate, or equivalent degree.
Vocational and technical training is parallel to secondary or offered as post-secondary education. The specific levels identified are different across samples: the 1990 and 2000 samples include elementary, preliminary, lower intermediate, and higher intermediate; while the 2011 sample has pre-vocational, upper-secondary certificate, and post-secondary certificate. The pre-vocational form I-III are equivalent to lower secondary education form I-III.
Higher education includes diplomas, degrees (3 years), master (2 years), and doctorate (3 years) programs offered by polytechnics and universities. The HSC is required to pursue higher education.
The Mauritius 1990, 2000, and 2011 samples asked about persons' primary or secondary educational attainment but without distinguishing whether they completed or are pursuing an education level. The person's school attendance (attending or attended) is used to subtract one year for persons currently in school to reflect that they have not completed the year they are attending.
