Description

EDUCCI indicates the person's educational attainment in Ivory Coast in terms of the level of schooling completed.

Comparability — General

The Ivory Coast educational system follows a 6-4-3 structure:

  • Primary education comprises two years of a preparatory course, two years of an elementary course, and two years of an intermediate course.
  • Middle school covers four grades, between 6th to 3rd.
  • High school covers three grades, including 2nd, 1st, and terminal.

In 1988, Ivory Coast does not report years of education; only levels are provided. The 1998 sample reports years of education within level.

Technical education encompasses various degrees, parallel to middle school, high school, or higher education, and with a duration of 2 to 3 years. The 1988 sample only has one response category for technical or professional secondary, while the 1998 sample provides details about specific degrees. Persons indicating 'Certificate of Professional Aptitude (CAP1-3),' 'Certificate of Professional Studies (BEP1-2),' 'Professional Certificates (BP1-2)', and 'Technician Certificates (BT1-2)' are classified under 'Vocational secondary, lower.' Individuals noting 'Technical Training,' and 'Preparatory' are considered under 'Vocational secondary, upper.'

Post-secondary education comprises bachelor, master, diploma of advanced studies (DEA), doctorate degrees, as well as the 'Certificate of Higher Technician (BTS)' and the 'Technology University Diploma (DUT)'. The 1988 sample offers a single response category for higher education, while in 1998 the various degrees are classified according to the equivalent number of years of higher education.

In 1998, the sample records the last year completed for those not attending school and the current year for those who are currently attending, but it does not indicate whether this year has been completed. Thus, we may be overestimating educational attainment by one year for those currently in school.
