Goods or property items owned by the household
[Questions 58.1-58.5 were asked of all households]
58.1 Do you own the following goods? Write down 1 if the answer is "yes" or 2 if the answer is "no" (for all items listed below)
This section provides information on the goods that household owns. Information on the households' owned goods, and that is normally part of the equipment of the spaces used for habitation [radio receptors, televisions, for example], must be obtained by referring to the households. The modality codes for this variable are:
Q: "Does your household possess any of the following goods?"
Cite, one by one, each listed good and write, as you go, the modality code corresponding to the given response. All listed items must be cited one by one according their numbering order.
In the small box situated opposite from the designated good, write down the code "1" if the interviewee's answer is Yes, or the code "2" if the answer is No.

18.4 Car?
The last question of the Dwelling form has the intention of knowing most exactly the socioeconomic level of the household or the households that reside in the dwelling you are enumerating. The specialists in social science and statistics have come to the conclusion that one of the best ways of measuring the social and economic level of persons who inhabit a dwelling is through the registering of the appliances like radio, stove, electric iron, black and white television set, color television set, refrigerator, washer, bath warmer, telephone, vacuum cleaner, hot water tank, automobile vehicle that is not used for work or is principally for recreation. It is supposed that together with the evaluation of the state of the dwelling and the measuring of the education level, establishing if the households possess or not this type of appliances is a good indication of the social and economic level of the people who compromise the respective household.
As you will observe, it concerns those appliances that can be owned by one or more members of the household in question, but that are used by all of them. You should mark with an X, in each case, if in the household exists or not each one of the mentioned appliances.
[To the left of the text is a form.]
{Definitions respective of each type of appliance that is included in question 13}
In the case of the appliance radio or television in black and white or in color you should register if they "have" it or they "do not have" it in each household the type, size and number of them not being important. About the stove you should be careful that it concerns an appliance or mechanism made with the purpose of cooking or heating food. This means that an electric or gas grill, for example, or portable stove, a collection of stones or logs used in an improvised manner by the residents of a dwelling each time they want to eat, with the purpose of heating or cooking food is not taken to be a stove.
By what is referred to as "electric iron", it is clear that you should register only irons that work via electricity.
The refrigerator is found in a large amount of Costa Rican households due to, among other things, the increase of populations or human settlements that have electricity service. Nevertheless, refrigerators that work with other types of energy exist. In the case of those that are run on for example butane gas, consequently, you should register as "refrigerator" the appliance that is used to store in the cold food or materials that are perishable, the type of energy that it needs so that its motor works is not important. All this does not concern a freezer or other appliances that people use to keep their food cold, in which case you should indicate that the dwelling does not have a "refrigerator".
The washer does not offer major problems in comprehension since it only is an electric or gas machine that washes clothes.
The same thing does not occur with mechanisms that are employed to heat water that the members of a census household use both to bathe as well as to clean equipment. Two types of appliances exist that are used in dwellings to heat water: "bath heater" that is also known as "termo-hit", and the "hot water tank". The first is an electric appliance that is placed near the spraying or water exit and is connected to it to heat this water once it is connected by means of a "switch", to interrupt or connect to the electrical current.
[p. 36]
On the other hand the "hot water tank" is a deposit of metal of other material that is used to heat a good amount of water and keeping it hot during a more or less long time of the day. This appliance is generally electric but the case can be given that you will find tanks for heating water by other means of energy. The "hot water tanks" are connected generally to the pipe that brings water to the baths and kitchens. Two different lines exist to write down what refers to "Bath heaters" and "Hot water tanks". If it has only a tank do not write down heater and if it has only a heater do not write down tank; it can be that it has both or it does not.
As to what "telephone" refers to, simply register if the dwelling that you enumerate "has" or "does not have" this service by the ICE.
The "vacuum cleaner" does not exist in all the houses in our country, but it is very probable that you will find in your segment dwellings households that have this type of appliance.
Finally, something about the "vehicle (not for work)". It is important to emphasize that here only those automotive vehicles not used for work of the Census Household should be included. In other words, you only should say yes if in the household there exists any automobile, "jeep", van, "station wagon", etc. that the family members use basically for moving from one place to another be it in pursuit of fun or pastimes be it for shopping or going to their place of work. But careful with confusing a vehicle that is used simply for going to work and from there back household or any other place! When it is specified that it concerns a "vehicle (but not for work)", it is because you should ignore those automobiles, "picks ups", "jeeps", trucks, vans, etc. that the household uses for work and with which the head of the household or any other member of the household works (transporting products, distributing articles of consumption, carrying people, etc.
18. In this dwelling do you have...?
Those devices of the dwelling that are found in good condition and used by its inhabitants will be included.
[p. 122]
If more than one household is found in the dwelling, the devices of all the households will be included and these should be recorded in the questionnaire for Household 1.
The devices of the landlords (they rent a room from an individual dwelling), should not be included, even though these are used by all the people of the dwelling.
Below some of the devices will be described:
Car (not a work vehicle): this includes cars that are available for the use of members of the household. It does not include those cars that were provided by a company or institution for labor purposes or those that are of exclusive use for work of a household member.

The appliances for this question are read, one by one; if the household has the appliance, the circle is filled in according to whether it is electric or not.
If the household does not have the appliance, the circle in the corresponding column is filled in.
For quantity, the circle corresponding to the number of appliances of the same type owned by the household is filled in. If in any case there are more than 3, the circle 3 is filled in.
Read all of the articles and services and fill in the bubble only when the answer is "yes".
9. Which of the following articles or services does your household have?

Ask one by one all the types of goods possessed by the household and circle code 1 if the respondent owns it and code 2 if the respondent does not own it. If the respondent possesses several commodities such as a radio or motorcycle but they do not work, then ask how long it has been damaged and if it is possible to repair. If the commodities can be repaired then it is still considered as possessed.

The importance of the data on appliances which are at the disposal of the household lies in the information obtained on the standard of living of families from different localities and different types of places. This information, together with other data, is used by the Central Bureau of Statistics to determine the standard of living grades of localities or areas in the localities. This information is an important factor in the distribution of government budgets and other budgets (such as: Mifal HaPayis - the National Lottery) to the local authorities.

- Write the respondent's answer even if he says a certain item is not at his disposal and you see the item in the apartment.
- If there are two or more households in the apartment and the appliances in the apartment are used by all the people living in it - each household should state that these items are at its disposal.
- VCR/DVD - VCR does not refer to a video camera, but to a device for recording and screening video tapes.
- Personal computer or laptop - does not refer to palm computers, but to desktop computers (PC) or laptops.
- Internet connection - only refers to internet connection from the apartment (and not general use of internet. For example: a person who has internet connection at work).

Inquire for each good or service, listen to the response, and register the code that corresponds to the respondent's statement for each good and service.
The bicycle response option considers those that are used as a means of transport to work, school, or shopping, among others. Those used for recreational purposes are not taken into account.
Motorcycle or moped includes tricycles and ATVs, regardless of type or size, as long as they are used as a means of transport.
[Figure omitted: image with text]
Radio listening device refers to any device that makes it possible to listen to any frequency (AM and FM) of massive radio broadcasting, and therefore includes radio, radio-recorder, radio alarm clock, and modular radio equipment, as well as devices that have this function, such as cell phones and music players, when their use is indicated by the respondent.
They have a television if the housing unit has any device that reproduces audiovisual television signals, in any form, model, or type of signal.
The laptop or tablet computer option includes desktop, laptop, and notebook computers. The housing unit has a cell phone if any of its residents have one. It includes smartphones.
They have internet if they have access to this means of communication, regardless of the device they use (fixed computer, laptop, cell phone, etc.).
This includes cases in which they have internet even if it is an open WiFi connection outside the housing unit, a situation that may occur because the signal is passed on, stolen, or because it is an open network in a public place that is very close to the housing unit, etcetera.
[p. 261]
Some of the goods and ICTs asked about are shown in the following images:
[Figure omitted: image with text]
In pay TV service, consider any type of provider and technology, whether cable, antenna, etc.; you can even mention names such as VeTv, Dish, Cablemas, Megacable, Sky, TV cable, or those in your work area.
The service of paid movies, music, or videos over the internet refers to the availability in the home to access entertainment, such as watching movies or videos, or listening to music, may be: Netflix, Claro video, Blim, Spotify, Apple music, among others, as long as the service is paid for.
Consider that yes they have appliances when they are in working condition or if the respondent indicates that they are out of order, but they will have them repaired.
If you are informed that any appliance or vehicle belongs to the company or institution where any of the residents of the housing unit work, consider that they do not have it.
Other goods and ICTs that are being asked about are shown in the following images:

F1. Does the household have? (admits more than one answer)
Read the Question and wait for the response. Mark an X in all alternatives where responses are positive. If the household does not have the listed goods leave blank the space to write down the answer. Notice that this Question admits more than one response.
The following assets were considered: radio, TV, telephone, computer, car, motorcycle, and bicycle. Note that you must write down only the goods in working condition.
If the household does not have any of the goods listed, mark an X in alternative number 8 "None of the above".

[7] Do you have the following facilities in your household?
Question 7: what facilities are available in this house? (Multiple responses are possible and accepted)
This question is trying to understand whether the family has modern household facilities as stated above. The references 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 denote items related to communication, information and entertainment, references 8, 9, 10 and 11 denote transportation items, and reference 12 denotes refrigerator. Such facilities in a family might be one or more than one. Thus, ask the family about each reference items and circle the references if they have such facilities. For example, if the family have radio, circle the reference 1 and if they also have cycle, circle the reference 10, too. Similarly, if they have other facilities such as television and mobile phone, then circle the reference 2 and reference 7 respectively.
These services in the family generally have to be in use and they should be working / not be stopped working in the day of enumeration. But if the item can be simply repaired and it can work but not working at the time of enumeration, then such stuffs should be considered working.
For example, if the family have motorcycle and it is in good condition, but has got a puncture or plug is not working or general malfunction, and hence put in the house without using, but can be used with simple repair and the family is planning to use it after some repair, in such case even the family has not using at the time of enumeration, the motorcycle should be considered as a facility the family have. However, if the motorcycle is in very bad condition and cannot be used with simple repair and there is no certainty whether to use it or not in the future, in such case it is considered that they family do not have a motorcycle. Similar conditions apply to other remaining facilities.
The materials / stuffs of those services have been generally described below:
8. Motor - If there are any kind of automobiles the family are using for the purpose of its own travel or transportation (e.g. four-wheel motor, car, taxi, bus, minibus, microbus, TATA mobile, jeep, tempo, tractor, trelar, etc.), circle the reference 8. But,

H14-Presence of Household Conveniences/Devices
This item provides information on selected housing conveniences and information and communications technology (ICT) devices, the presence of which in the household indicates the means of communication through which the population can be most easily reached. This also provides a basis for leisure statistics. The presence of motor vehicles in the household provides data about access to private transport. It can also provide information for the construction of roads/bridges and solution to traffic problems.
In general, the presence of household conveniences/devices can be used as proxy indicators in determining the socio-economic status of the household.
Ask the question: "Does this household have the following household conveniences/devices in working condition?" and read out the items listed in the questionnaire one by one. Write "X" in the box for a Yes or No answer.
The category "radio/radio cassette" includes transistor radio, radiophone, stereo or karaoke. "Personal computer" includes desktop, laptop, notebook, and netbook.
Exclude any aforementioned household item which has not been in working condition for six months or longer (although intended to be repaired). Exclude also motor vehicles (cars/jeeps/vans, motorcycles/tricycles or motorized bancas/boats) which are used exclusively for business purposes.
