Comparability — General

Some samples indicate the precise number of deaths in MORTNUM.

Some samples have datasets describing individual mortality events. These supplementary data files can be downloaded and linked to IPUMS extracts for those samples.

Although most source variables detail the number of deaths in the 12 month period prior to the census, some samples have different reference periods ranging up to 24 months prior. See the country comparison sections below for these samples.

Comparability — Benin [top]

The samples record deaths within the previous 12 months, approximately. The census question in 1992 refers specifically to a 12-month period, while those in 2002 and 2013 ask about deaths that happened since the beginning of the previous calendar year (i.e. they cover a period longer than 12 months).

Comparability — Bolivia [top]

Although the census dates were in June 1992, September 2001, and November 2012, the census questions ask for any deaths in the 1991, 2000, and 2011 calendar years, respectively. The reference period still covers 12 months.

Comparability — Botswana [top]

The census question for all Botswana samples refers to any deaths that occurred since September 30th of the previous year (Independence Day). The time frame therefore depends on the census date, but it covers approximately the past 11 months.

Comparability — Cambodia [top]

In the 2004, 2013 and 2019 samples, the data record whether there were any deaths in household in the last 12 months.

Comparability — Côte d'Ivoire [top]

The 1988 census question records whether there were any deaths from November 1997.

Comparability — Dominican Republic [top]

The 2010 sample records deaths between January 1st and December 31st, 2009.

Comparability — El Salvador [top]

While the 2007 census specifies the 12 month period prior to the census day, the 1992 sample asks about deaths occurring in 1991 or 1992. Therefore, the reference period was approximately 20 months for this sample.

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

The data for both samples record the number of deaths in the previous 12 months.

Comparability — Guatemala [top]

The 1994 sample records whether there were deaths in the household since January 1st, 1992. Therefore, the reference period was roughly 28 months for this sample.

Comparability — Guinea [top]

The 2014 sample refers to the number of deaths in the household in the last 12 months.

Comparability — Honduras [top]

The 2001 sample records deaths in the previous calendar year.

Comparability — Indonesia [top]

The 1976 census asks for deaths in the previous two years (24 months). The 1985 census question asks for deaths since June 30, 1984, whereas the 2010 question asks for deaths since January 1, 2009. This makes the reference periods approximately 15 and 17 months, respectively.

The 2005 census asks only about deaths in the "past year."

Comparability — Lesotho [top]

The data record number of deaths in the household in the previous 12 months.

Comparability — Liberia [top]

The data for every sample record the number of deaths in the previous 12 months.

Comparability — Mali [top]

The 1987 and 1998 samples record the number of deaths in the past year. The 2009 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household in the past year.

Comparability — Mozambique [top]

The 2007 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household between August 1, 2006 and July 21, 2007.

Comparability — Nepal [top]

The 2001 and 2011 samples record whether there were any deaths in the household in the last 12 months. The 2011 enumeration instructions indicate to include newborns that died after very short period of their birth but to exclude stillbirths.

Comparability — Nicaragua [top]

The census question asks for deaths since January 1, 2004. Because the census was taken in early June 2005, the reference period was approximately 17 months.

Comparability — Paraguay [top]

The 2002 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household during 2001.

Comparability — Rwanda [top]

The 2012 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household during the past year.

Comparability — Senegal [top]

The 2002 and 2013 samples refer to the number of deaths in the household in the last 12 months.

Comparability — Sierra Leone [top]

The source variable in 2004 provides the number of deaths last year.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2007, 2011, and 2016 samples record if there were any deaths in the 12 months preceding the census.

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

The census question for all Tanzania samples refers to deaths in the last 12 months.

Comparability — Togo [top]

The 2010 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household during the last 12 months.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2002 and 2014 samples refer to the number of deaths in the household in the last 12 months.

Comparability — Vietnam [top]

Both the 1989 and 1999 censuses ask for deaths between the previous year's Tet holiday and the census date. This amounts to a reference period of approximately 14 months for both samples.

Comparability — Zambia [top]

The 1990 sample records whether there were any deaths in the household in the past year. The 2010 sample records the number of deaths in the household in the previous year.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The data record deaths in the previous 12 months.
