Description
EDUCCL indicates the person's educational attainment in Chile in terms of the level of schooling completed and the number of years completed at that level.
Comparability — General
The biggest comparability issue is the fact that Chile modified its educational system in the 1970s. The old system had 6 years of primary and 6 of secondary. In the new system, primary (basic) has 8 years, and secondary (middle) has 4 years. The 1960 sample only has the old system of primary levels; the 1970 and 2017 samples explicitly have both types of systems; and the 1982, 1992 and 2002 samples report only the new system. Vocational education at the secondary level is only available in the 2017 sample.
The samples report varying types of secondary education person received under the old 6-6 educational system. Each of these is distinguished in the second digit of EDUCCL.
The more recent samples identify types of post-secondary education in addition to university. The 2017 sample indicates graduate degrees such as master's and doctoral degrees.
The 2002 and 2017 samples identify special education.
The 2017 sample identifies nursery school and pre-kindergarten.
