It is census time and the Central Statistical Service (CSS) needs information about you and your household. Please give particulars of each person who was present in this household at night between Wednesday 9 October and Thursday 10 October 1996.
The questionnaire contains columns for information on nine people. The details of only one person should be indicated in a particular column. If there are more than nine (9) people, please make use of additional questionnaires. People who are absent overnight (e.g. people working, travelling, at a church vigil, at an entertainment venue) should be included in the household if they return to it on Thursday 10 October, without being counted elsewhere. South African and foreign visitors and boarders who were in the household on Census night, should all be counted as part of the household. Additional information regarding the completion of the questionnaire is contained in the accompanying information sheet.
Domestic workers and live-in employees are regarded as separate households. They should therefore complete separate questionnaires.

It is important to establish the spending power of the population, in order to measure and understand the economy. Therefore the census needs information on the income of all people.
